Still alive!

Does this look like someone with brain cancer?!?

I am beyond grateful for my oncology team and the many nurses supporting me. I did not want brain surgery, but I trusteed that they knew me and what is important to me and my treatment. My oncologist got me to United hospital and they have taken good care of me here. 

I had a good sized lump removed from the back of my brain. They have worked to wean down my pain meds and remove the drainage tube. I got a shower today and will go home by the end of the week. It feels pretty good for brain surgery! 

The pathology came back as the same breast cancer, which was to be expected and I think is good. We plan to treat the tumor bed with focused radiation to kill off anything that couldn't be cut out. Then I'll get a combination of chemo drugs that will protect my brain better this time. 

Prayer
That there is limited to no side effects of the radiation and new chemo. 

Pray for continued recovery from surgery. I’m feeling pretty good and ready to go home. 

Prayer for good balance for rollerskating. I’m going to have to be patient and work my way up.

That I knew something was wrong and was able to get treatments quickly

That the tumor was relatively easy to remove and the doctors have more medicine to treat it with

    Thankful for your amazing doctors and for your intuition to act when you felt not right! love you and we can roller skate together when you are ready…holding hands for friend support ❤️

The good: My first infusion was a breeze! My port worked great, my nurses were kind and supportive, and I didn’t have any reactions to the chemo. They gave me a bell to ring in case I felt any immediate reactions to the chemo. It took every ounce of will power not to ring it for fun. The nurses apparently don’t like those kinds of jokes because a ringing bell send them all running to help. I kept myself busy with Marco Polo, texts, audio books, knitting and Netflix, so the time actually went by pretty quickly. The set up is a big room full of recliners, and, bonus, the recliners are decked out with heat and massage features. I was lucky enough to get a chair by the window with sweet rays of sunshine falling on me. Really, the worst part of chemo so far was sneezing in my mask.  Now the bad and the ugly: My biopsy results came in after I got home from chemo. The schedule 11/8-16

 Here's the schedule from now until my first infusion. I wanted to give an overview so you know what our week is looking like a how to pray for us. Monday, November 8th, I’m having a small surgery in the morning to place a port.  When it’s done, I’ll have a small bump under my right clavicle where they’ll have quick and easy access to my veinous system. They’ll use the port to take blood samples when needed and it’s where I’ll receive all of my infusions. To be honest, I’m completely grossed out by the idea of having this tube thing running directly into my vein, so I’ve tried not to google it too much. It should only be painful while it’s healing, and hopefully it will make life easier for me through treatment. The biggest win for me is that I won’t have tubes in my arms during infusions so my hands will be free to knit! Tuesday, I’m scheduled for an echocardiogram. I’m super!!

  I had my appointment with the Mayo surgeon today. My hope was that he would have the results from my PET scan last Thursday, and I was a little disappointed when he didn’t lead with that. He hadn’t seen it yet. After a little searching in my file, he was able to find the PET scan report. I think we were both a little nervous as he read it to me live, neither of us knowing if it was going to be good or bad. It was all good!!!! The report said I had outstanding metabolic results and that all previous areas of cancer have been resolved. He said I’m what they call a super responder. I’m usually pretty happy when someone calls me super or outstanding, but today those words mean more than anything. I think I’m in shock that cancer could come and go in and out of my life so quickly. I know cancer and I aren’t done with each other; we’ll likely be life long adversaries, but this is a huge triumph!
